The Coaching Experience
Some people are uneasy with the idea of coaching: “What does it mean? Is it like counseling? Are they going to tell me what to do? Will they force me to emote? Must I do push-ups or buy a bunch of gear? Will I meet Tom Brady?”
With Michael Rose Coaching, you’ll receive the counsel, nurturing support and gentle prodding of a gifted coach with decades of experience helping busy professionals create better versions of themselves and their organizations. Relying on a client-tested blend of structured exercises, penetrating questions and open dialogue, we’ll chase after the mind-body-spirit connections that are uniquely your own; the collective experiences that get you into the end zone with a huge smile, a warm heart and no regrets.
Working With Clients
Foundational Exercises
After the initial getting-to-know-you conversation, we’ll explore three exercises intended to begin our journey from the conceptual to the actual. Recognizing that people process information differently and that different types of questions elicit unique responses, the exercises are arranged in this way:
- Foundations of Fulfillment: highly structured tool in which clients select items from a list and assign personal priorities– a sort of menu for feelings of purpose, vitality, and happiness. It really can be that good!
- Ideal Week: semi-structured exercise in which the items you selected above are positioned, calendar style, in the mornings, afternoons and evenings of your ideal future life. You might create a different version for each season, or for home vs. travel. “I know I can make this work because there it is on the calendar!”
- Free Form: utterly unrestricted opportunity to express your hopes and dreams for what comes next; you can write a few sentences, several paragraphs, or the great American novel. Just open up the spigot and let it all come out. Brain dump! Feeling dump! “In a perfect world, I would…”
These exercises are a great way for you and I to begin our journey of discovery and realization. They also represent an opportunity to build familiarity, confidence and trust. Having done this a while, I understand that you won’t reveal the juicy morsels at your tender center until you trust me, and feel safe and not judged.
Ongoing Calls
During our regular calls we discuss what’s top of mind for you – the issues that feel most important in the moment, and then segue into action items, challenges, and untapped opportunities that were raised in the previous call. What progress was made and where did you get stuck? What new issues surfaced? How are family members and friends reacting to this process?
All the while I’ll be a supportive sounding board, offering suggestions to further your mastery of the game plan that is uniquely suited to you. And, if necessary, I’ll call “Flag on the play!” if you suggest a course of action that conflicts with stated objectives. We’ll end up getting to know each other reasonably well. If your personality indicates X and you’re aiming at Y, I’ll gently but firmly call that out. With humility and respect, I’ll do all I can to drive toward successful outcomes.
At the end of each call we’ll align on next steps for the following call. What conversations with colleagues or friends will help you fine tune your understanding? What techniques for self-discovery or conversations with family members will uncover your true motivations and desires? What specific steps will bring clarity to your third act vision? Should you join a club or group, take an exploratory class, reach out to an acquaintance who is now doing what you might want to do, or buy that ’57 Chevy you always wanted?
